Brechin City 3 Dunfermline Athletic 2
Sun, 26th Jan 2014
The Pars somehow contrived to lose this match from being two goals to the good. Lawrence Shankland’s second goal in three games had given the Pars the advantage at half-time before Ryan Wallace doubled the lead following a solo run. At that stage things were looking promising but Brechin first pulled one back, then equalised, then scored an 89th minute winner.

Two of the teams chasing Rangers at the top of the division matched up at East End Park, with the home team running out victorious by the odd goal in five. Poor defending from set pieces twice allowed the visitors to take the lead; twice the Pars equalised through the merest touch by Thomson from a Drummond corner, and then a Byrne deflection, before late substitute Lawrence Shankland poked home from close range to edge the Pars ahead. A late red card for El Bakhtaoui made it harder but Dunfermline held on.

Stenhousemuir must be getting sick of the sight of the Pars and their last minute winners. On this occasion especially the home team must feel they had done more than enough to earn at least a point after Lynch has scored a late equaliser to cancel out Faissal El Bakhtauoi’s early strike in his first Dunfermline start. However, as we have been saying all season, you write off this Pars’ side at your peril, and sure enough, Geggan scored a 91st minute winner from Drummond’s corner to get the New Year off to a good start.
